What nano brows actually are

Nano brows, also sold as digital or machine hairstroke brows, are drawn with a single ultra-fine needle mounted in a rotary machine. The needle enters and exits the skin at a controlled depth and speed, laying pigment in individual strokes that follow the direction your own brow hair grows.

The contrast with microblading is mechanical. Microblading uses a hand-held blade to cut a small channel and pack pigment into it. A blade cut is a slice. A nano stroke is a line of tiny, closely spaced points. That difference is why nano strokes stay crisp on skin types where a bladed stroke tends to spread and blur into a soft shadow after healing.

Nano brows or microblading

Both produce hair-stroke brows and both look natural when done well. The right choice comes down to your skin and how long you want the result to hold.

• Skin type. Microblading performs best on normal to dry skin. Oily skin pushes pigment out of a bladed channel faster and softens the strokes. Nano handles oily and combination skin considerably better.
• Longevity. Nano brows generally hold two to three years before a full refresh. Microblading is closer to twelve to eighteen months.
• Trauma to the skin. A machine needle is gentler than a blade, which matters if you have thin or reactive skin.
• Cost. Microblading is $450. Nano brows are $600.
• Correcting past work. If a previous microblading has blurred, nano is usually the better tool for rebuilding definition over it.

If your skin is dry and you want the lower price, microblading is a perfectly good service and we perform it. If your skin runs oily, or you have had brow work blur on you before, paying the difference for nano will save you money across the life of the brows.

What the appointment looks like

The first session runs two and a half to three hours, and most of the early part is not tattooing at all. It is mapping. We measure the brow against your facial geometry, draw the proposed shape in pencil, and adjust it with you until you are happy, because the shape is the part you will live with. No pigment goes in until you approve what is drawn on your face.

Topical numbing goes on before the work starts and is refreshed throughout. Most clients describe brows as light scratching. It is among the more comfortable areas in permanent makeup.

Healing follows a predictable arc. For the first three days the colour looks noticeably darker and sharper than the final result. Between days three and seven there is light flaking, which must be left alone. By day fourteen the colour has softened into its true shade, and full settling takes four to six weeks. A touch-up after that window is what turns a good result into a finished one.

Before you book

Avoid blood thinners such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and fish oil for 48 hours beforehand, and skip alcohol for 24 hours. Stop retinol, acids, and chemical peels over the brow area two weeks out, and stay out of the sun. Eat before you arrive so your blood sugar is steady through a long appointment.
