Why Aftercare Matters More Than You Think

Why Aftercare Matters More Than You Think

You can have the world's best PMU artist work on your brows — but if you don't follow proper aftercare, your results will suffer. At Perfect Line in Los Angeles, we've seen perfectly executed microblading and lip blush procedures produce disappointing healed results simply because the client didn't follow the aftercare protocol.

The good news: PMU aftercare is simple. It just requires consistency for 2 weeks. This guide walks you through exactly what to do — day by day.

This guide applies to: Microblading, Combination Brows, Ombré Powder Brows, Hairstroke Brows, Eyeliner Tattoo, and Lip Blush. Specific instructions may vary — always follow the guidance given by your artist.

The Golden Rules of PMU Aftercare

  • Keep it clean — gentle cleansing with water only
  • Keep it moisturized — thin layer of healing ointment twice daily
  • Keep your hands off — no touching, rubbing, or picking
  • Keep it dry — avoid soaking, sweating, or swimming
  • Keep it protected — no sun, no makeup on treated area

Day-by-Day PMU Aftercare Guide

Day 1 — Procedure Day

Your brows or lips will appear significantly darker and more defined than the final result. This is completely normal — the color will soften dramatically as healing progresses. Mild redness, swelling, and tenderness are expected.

What to do: Gently blot any lymph fluid with a clean damp cotton pad 2–3 times during the day. Apply a thin layer of healing ointment before bed using a clean cotton swab.

Days 2–3 — Initial Settling

Color remains intense. The area may feel tight or slightly uncomfortable. Resist the urge to wet the area beyond gentle cleansing.

What to do: Cleanse gently with water (no cleansers, no soaps). Apply healing ointment morning and night. Do not apply makeup over the treated area.

Days 4–5 — Peeling Begins

The skin starts to flake and shed. This is the most critical phase — the pigment beneath the flaking skin is still settling, and premature removal of flakes can pull pigment out with them.

What to do: Let skin shed naturally. Never pick, peel, or scratch. Continue ointment application. Brows may look lighter or patchy — this is normal.

Days 6–7 — Active Peeling

Peeling continues. Your brows or lips may look uneven, patchy, or lighter than expected. The "ghost phase" is beginning. Stay patient — the final result is weeks away.

What to do: Same routine. Protect from sun exposure. Avoid exercise that causes heavy sweating.

Days 8–10 — The Ghost Phase

Peeling is mostly complete. Color may appear to have almost disappeared. This alarms many clients — but it's a completely normal part of the healing process. A fresh layer of skin has formed over the pigment, temporarily making it appear lighter.

What to do: Continue moisturizing. Be patient. Do not book a color boost yet — the true result hasn't emerged.

Days 11–14 — Color Returns

Pigment begins to resurface as the skin continues to heal and become more transparent. Color will gradually become visible again, softer and more natural than it appeared immediately post-procedure.

What to do: Gentle cleansing continues. Can introduce very mild, fragrance-free skincare around (not on) the treated area. Still avoid direct sun.

Weeks 3–4 — Settling

Color is still developing. Most clients are happy with what they see but may notice some areas appear lighter than others. This is normal and will be addressed at your touch-up.

Weeks 5–6 — Fully Healed Result

Your true healed PMU result is now visible. Colors are soft, natural, and settled. This is the time to assess your results and book your touch-up if needed.

What to Avoid After PMU — Complete Checklist

  • No facial lotion, serum, or skincare on the treated area
  • No direct sun exposure on the treated area
  • No saunas, steam rooms, or jacuzzis
  • No swimming in pools, oceans, or recreational bodies of water
  • No heavy exercise causing excessive sweating
  • No contact with animals or gardening
  • No picking, rubbing, or scratching

For 4 Weeks After Procedure:

  • No Botox near the treated area
  • No Retinol, Retin-A, AHA/BHA, Vitamin C on or near the area
  • No laser facials, Fraxel, CO2, or IPL treatments
  • No tanning beds or extended sun exposure on the area
  • No chemical peels near the treated area

Long-Term PMU Care — Keep Results Looking Great

Once fully healed, a few simple habits will extend the life of your PMU significantly:

  • Always wear SPF — UV exposure is the #1 cause of PMU fading. Apply sunblock to brows and lips daily.
  • Avoid harsh exfoliants over the treated area in your skincare routine
  • Be mindful of retinol — long-term use of retinol on or near brows will accelerate fading
  • Schedule annual touch-ups — a quick refresh keeps your results looking sharp

When to Book Your Touch-Up

A touch-up is recommended 1–3 months after your original procedure. At this appointment, Yu-Jin can refine shape, fill in any areas where pigment didn't fully retain, and adjust color if needed. Touch-ups at Perfect Line are $100.

Please contact us within one month of your procedure to secure your touch-up slot in time.

Common Aftercare Mistakes to Avoid

Getting the area wet too soon

Even showering — steam and direct water contact can loosen pigment before it's fully set. Apply a thin layer of ointment before showering to create a protective barrier.

Applying too much ointment

Thick layers of ointment can suffocate the skin and actually draw out pigment. Always apply a very thin layer using a cotton swab — just enough to keep the area from feeling dry.

Panicking during the ghost phase

The ghost phase (days 8–12) where color seems to disappear is completely normal. Do not book an emergency color boost — wait for the full 6-week healing period before assessing your results.

Booking a laser facial too soon

Laser treatments can completely remove PMU pigment. Wait at least 4 weeks after your procedure before any laser treatment, and inform your laser technician about your PMU beforehand.

Skipping the touch-up

The touch-up is an essential part of the PMU process — not an optional add-on. It's when we perfect the work and ensure you get the full result you came in for. Don't skip it.
